Where the thin kerf matters

Anywhere the cut edge is visible when the job is finished. Porcelain and ceramic wall and floor tile, stone benchtop cut-outs, sills and treads, mitred external corners. A thicker blade removes more material and puts more heat into the piece, and heat is what causes the chipping and micro-cracking on a glazed face.

Score the face first, then cut through. Let the blade do the work — pushing generates heat and heat is what wrecks the edge and the blade.

Cutting stone and tile means cutting silica

Porcelain, granite, quartz and engineered stone are high in crystalline silica. Since 1 September 2024 the NSW WHS (Crystalline Silica Substances) Regulation has required PCBUs to control silica processing, run a risk control plan, carry out air monitoring and provide health monitoring. Dry-cutting stone with a grinder produces very high respirable dust levels — water suppression or on-tool extraction first, RPE alongside it, and HEPA air scrubbing indoors.
