Why thin discs win on metal

A thin kerf removes less material, which means less friction, less heat and a faster cut. On stainless that matters twice over: heat discolours the cut edge and can damage the passive layer that makes stainless stainless. On RHS, angle, rebar and threaded rod it just means you get through quicker with less burr to grind off afterwards.

The trade-off is that a 1.2mm disc is not a grinding wheel. Never use the face of it, never lean it sideways in a cut, and never fit it to a grinder without the guard on.

Before you fit one

Check the disc for cracks and check the expiry date — bonded abrasives have a shelf life, usually three years from manufacture, and the date is printed on the ring. Check your grinder's no-load speed does not exceed the 12,200 rpm rating. Fit the guard, wear eye and face protection, and stand out of the plane of rotation while it spins up.

Can I grind with it? No. Cutting only, edge only. A thin disc used on its face will shatter.

Will it cut aluminium? It will, but aluminium loads the disc badly. Use a dedicated non-ferrous disc if you cut a lot of it.

Do they expire? Yes. Check the printed date on the ring and do not use a disc past it.
