Blocking versus absorbing

These do two jobs at once. The dense felt and PVC layers block transmission, and it is what the neighbours and the council notice. The absorption wool works on the inside face, cutting the reflected noise that builds up inside a hoarded or enclosed area and makes the whole site louder than the tool itself.

A single-layer tarp does neither. It flaps and it reflects.

What does 28 dB actually mean on site? STC is a laboratory transmission rating, not a guarantee of on-site reduction. Real-world performance depends on coverage, gaps, and flanking paths around and under the barrier. Gaps are what kill acoustic curtains — a 5% open area undoes most of the rating.

How do I fix them? Through the eyelets to scaffold tube, temporary fence or hoarding frame. Overlap the panels; do not butt them.

Which rating do I need? If the works have a council noise condition or a noise management plan, take the number to your acoustic consultant. 

Are they weatherproof? The PVC tarpaulin face and fibreglass backing are. Store them dry between jobs, wet wool is heavy wool.
