Fixing off into a wall where you cannot tell what is behind the render until you are in it. Hanging services through a mixed substrate — fibre cement sheet over timber, brick veneer over stud. Does it need a hammer drill?

It works in rotary or hammer mode. Use hammer for brick and block, rotary for tile and fibre cement so you do not blow the face out.

Is it a substitute for a proper SDS bit?

No. For repeat holes in hard concrete use an SDS carbide bit. This kit is for mixed-substrate fix-out work.
