Disposable Hazmat Coverall – Type 5/6 Microporous | Asbestos & Demolition

Why microporous, and why it matters

WorkSafe Victoria has issued a safety alert about disposable coveralls sold for asbestos work. The problem it identifies is coveralls "made from single layer, lightweight polypropylene that may allow fine dust to penetrate", which "tend to tear easily" and are "usually supplied with little or no information" for an employer to assess suitability. Some, it notes, are "advertised as suitable for asbestos use without test reports being available."

The standard the alert names is Type 5, Category III, to EN ISO 13982-1. This coverall is certified to that standard, and to Type 6 for liquid splash and EN 1149-5 for antistatic performance. A microporous laminate works differently to a single-layer nonwoven: the film blocks particulate while remaining permeable to water vapour, so it stops fine dust without turning into a sweat box.

Wearing it properly

Where there is a risk from airborne solid particulates, tape the zip and tape the gloves at the wrists and the boots at the ankles, with the sleeve overlapping the glove opening. Select the correct size, a coverall that splits at the shoulder because it was a size too small has stopped protecting anyone. Check for seam defects and faulty zips before wearing, and change out immediately if the garment is punctured or torn.

Coveralls are single use. Dispose of them in accordance with the requirements applying to the material you have been working with.
